OMG! This is real horror, not the so-called literary horror you might find in a Datlow anthology, or the other best of year anthologies. (But it is well written — way, way, waaaay better written than most horror novels on audiobookBay.) It would make a great but grisly movie too: early cronenberg + hammer + nunsploitation + those predictable but fun hollywood suspensers.
I think this one is at a level which far surpasses his other novels. (This one even comes with a 7 hour soundtrack of sorts on Spotify! Search for ITALIAN GOTHIC HORROR for his playlist, for the music he listened to while creating this novel. And he put the 130+ songs/tracks in a particular order, so don’t shuffle.)
Also, The Suffering doesn’t have the problems with plot/story-logic from which Maggie’s Grave suffers. That novel includes a historically-effective ritual which makes no sense, and associates promiscuous group sex with Satan. The new one does too, but it makes sense given the setting/context & effects of physical contact.
PS: I’m not opposed to literary horror. Stephen Graham Jones’ Buffalo Hunter (is that the title?) is a masterpiece. So is Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Stoker’s Dracula, not to mention Stevenson’s Jekyll and Hyde. Those classics have inspired hundreds if not thousands of different interpretations and commentaries and riffs. (The 1990s queer theory takes on Dracula are really fun. I think Crimp wrote my favorite. Remember, it’s content not intent that matters.)
