In December 1975, the Lutz family moved into their new home on suburban Long Island.
George and Kathleen Lutz knew that, one year earlier, Ronald DeFeo had murdered his parents, brothers, and sisters in the house, but the property - complete with boathouse and swimming pool - and the price were too good to pass up.
Twenty-eight days later, the entire Lutz family fled in terror.
This is the spellbinding, best-selling, true story that gripped the nation - the story of a house possessed by evil spirits, haunted by psychic phenomena almost too terrible to describe.
Jay Anson began as a copy boy on the New York Evening Journal in 1937 and later worked in advertising and publicity. With more than 500 documentary scripts for television to his credit, he was associated with Professional Films, Inc. He died in 1980.

That book scared the hell out of me as a kid. The house I grew up in was haunted, and I decided I wanted answers, so off I went to the library. Well, one sadistic librarian handed me that book. Did not help.

Sounds like an evil librarian may have been at the root of this. And that even sounds like a Scooby Doo episode.

Great book and later a movie that answered the question “Can Ryan Reynolds pull off crazy / scary”? Yes. Yes, he can.

The Entity 1982 movie also won’t help.

I saw that movie later in life. Thankfully there was no succubus/incubus stuff going on, nor was it demonic.
It was just stuff would move and you could not find it for a few days then it would reappear where you set it. Lights would turn on and your would catch glimpses of a man and movement.
Once I woke up to a man standing over my bed smiling at me. He was wearing a 1870s Army Cavalry uniform. He just slowly disapated as I was looking at him. Now, my house was were a scrimish took place during the Indian Wars.
Another time it walked through me. That was just bizarre. About as close of the sensation I can get was a lot of static electricty while standing in front of a leaf blower and having a giant vacuum pulling at you from behind. I felt that through my whole body and heard a rushing/roaring sound.

Very scary stuff. Thanks for sharing!

I mean, the stuff in this book as been debunked and the actual murders that took place before the Lutz’s moved in proved to be anything but demonic.
If you are coming at this book as an extremely hyperbolic, even fictitious, based on “Real events” as much as the Texas Chainsaw Massacre was based on “Real” events outlook, then this is a good, scary book.
There has been zero reports of hauntings at this house since they moved out and all but one of the children since grown up even came out and said most of the stuff didn’t happen.

@amebix Texas Chain Saw Massacre was inspired by the Ed Gein case, which is quite dark and worth a read if you find the book Deviant. 😉
But yes, things happened at the house but it’s been massively overblown.
