Thanks. Download is still available. If anyone wants to see the movie version, it’s excellent. It goes by a few titles, I think the original title is Full Circle. It stars Mia Farrow. And it is extremely dark, visually and otherwise. I don’t think there’s a moment of light-heartedness in it. It is dark. It is bleak. It is claustrophobic. And it is fucking scary.
I first learned of it from the slim 1979 book, The American Nightmare: Essays on the Horror Film, edited and curated by Robin Wood and Richard Lippe for the Toronto International Film Festival (then called the Festival of Festivals). I highly recommend all of those essays.
A couple essays really stand out. The essay on Jaws by Andrew Britton analyzes the film as a representation of a cultural shift about masculinity at the time.
The return of the repressed essay by Robin Wood is extremely influential. Btw, He later retracted his interpretation of David Cronenberg’s Shivers as a reactionary & conservative horror film. But his overall thesis isn’t damaged by subtracting that example. It’s a pretty simple thesis which has been made more sophisticated over the years by numerous scholars and critics. I think the core of the thesis is correct and still stands, though I don’t think films can generally be labeled simply as reactionary or progressive with the exception of a few, like The Conjuring.
