Hmm, did his collaborators temper or enhance the xenophobia and racism and fear of difference which constitutes the very heart, the mechanism, of his “horror” stories. Perhaps, happily, this is why the stories never worked on me.
(Though his weak & lazy writing was also a factor, esp his constant avoidance of descriptions beyond saying things were “unspeakable” or “beyond words” and so on.)

Everybody in that time was as virulently racist as HPL, Skay. Otherwise his works would not have seen print + he would not have had such a wide circle of equally racist writerly friends. Read like two pages of Conan the Barbarian, tops.
That said, I enjoy inverting the man’s work, since it’s so easy to see his heroes as sociopathic monsters and his monsters as benevolent pagan gods. Wish more modern writers had that take.

Such a bigot that he married a Jewish woman, such a homophobe that his best friend was a gay man, such a racist and misogynist that he helped women and minority authors get published. I mean what a bastard right? Oh and his father named the cat.
