  Oh, no. “…supernatural sorcery in the ancient rites and rituals of dark African jungles.… in a spine-chilling nightmare of black occultism and blood vengeance.”

  Sounds like it draws on the same racist tropes as did John Schlesinger’s old 1980s horror film, The Believers.

  The reverse-colonialism-paranoia-turned-reality is interesting & even entertaining when done well, and I confess to a guilty pleasure in The Believers, but the racism of it all is, …well, depressing & disappointing & will condemn these works to a marginal existence. (Or at least it should, but Lovecraft fandom suggests that this is not always the case. And in nearly all of his tales, Lovecraft’s horror doesn’t even work unless some of his xenophobia & racism is shared by the reader.)

  A four year late response to Tokyoghost - My post was to oppose hate not to promote it. And my post wasn’t criticizing the upload itself. I’m glad it was uploaded. And trolls, btw, post just to provoke people for the sake of provoking. They are the people who annoyingly play devil’s advocate for no good reason..

  If you’ve given English language horror any thought, you would see that a great deal of it reflects deep-seated cultural fears, like fear of immigrants, or fear of colonial subjects exacting their revenge. Virtually all of the mummy movies from the 30s and 40s and 50s reflect the latter fear.

  I don’t have a problem with people reading these or listening to these novels. I’m writing this now because I don’t remember this book and so I’m going to redownload it, after running across another recent horror novel that drops this author’s name. The important thing is, I think, that people are conscious of these themes and don’t just absorb them unthinkingly. Stoker’s dracula, is a fantastic novel despite its xenophobia and, as many queer theorists have pointed out, homophobia (Douglas Crimp wrote a incredibly fun and creative article on the sexual imagery in stoker’s Dracula)
